chocolate-PB-banana smoothie + APS protein powder giveaway

Hey friends! Hope your day is off to a strong start — and if not, here’s a protein-packed smoothie to fuel you up :)banana_chocolate_protein_smoothie_DSC0021The fit people at All-Pro Science sent me some of their protein powder to give a try — so I whipped up a chocolate-peanut butter-banana smoothie to test it out. Blogging is a tough job.

There are a million different types and varieties of protein out there (read articles here, here, and here for more info), so when you’re shopping for protein powder, be careful to read the labels. All Pro’s 100% grass-fed whey looks like:APS

Not too shabby, right? I tried out the Bavarian Chocolate flavor, and it tasted pretty dang good. Unlike a lot of protein powders, this one didn’t taste artificial, too sweet, or chalky to me.banana_chocolate_protein_smoothie_DSC0029Protein-packed shakes and smoothies are one of my favorite post-run or on-the-go snacks, and this one is so yummy that it almost qualifies as dessert :)banana_chocolate_protein_smoothie_DSC0023Ready for the recipe (and giveaway)?

Super Simple: Chocolate-Peanut Butter-Banana Protein Smoothie

  • 1 small, very ripe banana (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup milk (soy, almond, regular, whatever)
  • 4 ice cubes
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (I used APS’s Bavarian Chocolate)
  • 1/2 tablespoon peanut butter
  • Sprinkle of cocoa powder (optional)

Directions: Put all ingredients except for cocoa powder into the blender. Then, BLEND!!! Sprinkle with cocoa for an extra-lovely look.banana_chocolate_protein_smoothie_DSC0036

Winner gets a massive 23-ounce tub o’ APS 100% grass-fed whey protein powder, plus a 10.5-ounce container of APS’s Pre-Charge formula. Good luck :)

  1. 1) I always think of smoothies as being yogurt based and shakes as being ice cream based. But that’s totally something I made up 😉

    2) My favorite smoothie flavor is cherry chocolate! Frozen cherries plus chocolate protein powder. YUMMY.

  2. Hmm… shakes seem to be more ice-cream related; I agree with the previous posters.

That said, favorite flavors are either something tart (Raspberry Collider from Smoothie King!), Tropical, or with peanut butter and therefore a little savory, too. Not a huge fan of strawberry banana.

  3. I agree….shakes have ice cream and smoothies don’t.
My favorite smoothie is almond milk, protein powder, frozen banana, and frozen cappuccino. Yummy!!!! Peanut butter would be awesome in it too, but I usually don’t have extra calories to spare.

  4. I make a mean carrot cake smoothie with carrot juice, vanilla protein powder, almond milk, frozen banana, spinach, cinnamon and nutmeg! Tastes amazing!

    • LEAH! That sounds so good! I only make banana, frozen mango, vanilla almond milk and flax seed but CLEARLY I need to buy some carrot juice.

  5. I’ve had the Whey Gold Cookies and Cream protein powder and it tastes pretty amazing. Other than that, I’ve just blended a bit of vanilla ice cream, greek yogurt, milk, and blueberries. It might not sound like the healthiest but then again, they say that chocolate milk is the best recovery drink after a run because of its ratio of carbs and fat. I figure that ice cream has a great ratio of carbs and fat too so why not?

  6. off topic from your post of the day, but I wanted to let you know that I got that jar of Speculoos cookie butter that you had in an entry the other day – and HOLY COW my life just changed for the better. Amazing stuff! thanks so much for sharing. :o)

  7. I think Shakes contain Ice Cream, and Smoothies don’t?
If I am having a ‘shake’ and want to have a really indulgent treat I go to Coldstone and get the Creme de Menthe shake – It’s mint chocolate chip and it’s amazing (but it’s also like 1100 calories so It doesn’t happen often, at all).

Smoothies: I like everything. I can mix any fruit in with protein powder and milk and I’m good. I also like adding peanut butter, spinach and kale, coffee (great breakfast on the go option) maple syrup, and peanuts – depending on the flavor I’m going for.

  8. I always think of smoothies as being fruit-based and at least in theory, healthier (although lots of places manage to make them sugary). Shakes are milk and ice cream and totally dessert (and delicious). I love smoothies with protein after a long run in the summer!

  9. My favorite smoothie is anything with tons of FRUIT! :) and I always add protein powder… I think that’s the difference, maybe? Protein is added to smoothies but not shakes? They all taste good, so who knows! haha

  10. I have no idea about the difference between shakes and smoothies.
My favorite smoothie combination is usually strawberries, other mixed berries, honey, greek yogurt, juice or water, chia seeds, and some kale/spinach. It’s so yummy! The only thing is that I don’t have any ice, but I like my smoothies to be as thick and icy as possible. So, I’ll use all frozen ingredients (including the kale and spinach).

  11. I definitely think shakes are ice cream based while smoothies are milk/yogurt related. I looove berry smoothies and try to add lots of greens to them; my secret weapon is a few frozen pineapple chunks to balance out the sometimes bitter taste of the greens!

  12. My favorite smoothie is frozen bananas with peanut butter, chocolate, almond milk, protein powder and Greek yogurt to make it creamy! Yummy!

  13. I think that Smoothie is just a healthier word for Shake :) My favorite Smoothie is protein powder, creatine, mixed berries, oatmeal, coconut milk, and yogurt. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  14. They are totally the same, although I generally call something a smoothie when I am trying to make it sound healthier. I like chocolate peanut butter, but it has to be too thick to drink with a straw. The runny stuff is not for me.

  15. Anything w a banana…fruity and banana or chocolaty and banana or pb and banana….its not a smoothie to me w out a banana:)

  16. I love making pumpkin pie smoothies with pumpkin puree, hemp seeds, vanilla protein powder, almond milk, and pumpkin pie spice. I also love making green mint chocolate smoothies with spinach, kale, almond milk, peppermint extract, banana, and cocoa powder. Yum!

  17. I agree with most that ice cream is the differential between shake and smoothie, but then there are those pre-packaged protein beverages that get classified as “shakes,” so it’s really anyone’s guess…

My favorite smoothies start with a chocolate protein base and then add in frozen coffee cubes, frozen strawberries or bananas–and the occasional peanut butter or flax seed. A handful of spinach is always a stealthy healthy addition, too. And now I’ve made myself hungry…

  18. I love making berry smoothies with lots of mixed greens (can’t even taste them after the 1/2 tbsp pb and the 1/2 banana)…and I always add some cinnamon & vanilla for extra yummy flavor

Also love making banana “ice cream” when I need dessert in a pinch

  19. I tend to go with the ‘smoothies’ are healthy, ‘shakes’ are probably ice cream based. But I have no idea why I use them that way – probably just geographic language use! My current favorite is a chocolate protein based smoothie with frozen spinach, bananas and peanut butter. Yum.

  20. Mmmm, ice cream shakes are the best…but oh so bad for you :/
I have to say I love my smoothies with Spinach! Yes, spinach, blueberries, vanilla protien, and peanut butter, yumm!
